The Three Stages of Custom Home Painting
Custom builds aren’t like refreshing occupied properties. Everything changes – the timeline shifts, challenges increase, coordination becomes essential. We don’t just appear on day one applying coats immediately. We synchronize with builders, work around carpenters, coordinate with tapers and others. Our tested approach consistently yields professional outcomes. Here’s our full process from start to completion:

Drywall Priming
Following drywall completion, we begin priming operations. Ceilings receive spray coating plus backrolling for consistent coverage. Walls only get rolled – no spray application. The logic? Active construction creates constant dust. Sprayed walls collect airborne particles, feeling gritty afterward. Rolling method produces cleaner outcomes, works faster, needs minimal masking prep. Best trade-off between efficiency and surface quality.

Initial Painting
Initial painting begins once tiles are laid and carpentry is finished. Ideal conditions include completed flooring, installed vanities, mounted cabinets. This order protects new paint from subsequent trade damage. Work areas need clearing – tools put away, materials stored elsewhere, workers off-site. Basic site cleaning should precede our start.
Initial painting encompasses four stages – prep work, spray coating, wall application, and complete cleanup operations.
Preparations
All nail holes receive filling, damaged trim and doors get repaired. We fill hundreds of cracks where walls meet woodwork. Protection goes up over tiles, windows, floor surfaces to prevent overspray. Rushing preparation compromises results.
Spray Painting
Primer gets sprayed on all woodwork, then sanded perfectly smooth. Another primer layer follows, then additional sanding. Two topcoats complete the system, sanding occurs between applications. Four complete rounds deliver glass-smooth trim. Complete door coverage includes both faces and every edge.
Walls Painting, and Clean-Up
Walls get light sanding before first rolled application. Second coat follows, then final sanding for smooth results. All masking comes down, windows and floors get thorough cleaning. Feature walls and color breaks show clean lines without any bleeding.

Paint Touch Ups
Once remaining trades complete work – plumbing, electrical, countertop installation – we return for touch-ups. We correct any damage they created. Typically needs 2-4 days depending on trade count and their attention to detail.
Scuffed walls get attention, scratched trim receives fixes, damaged spots get recoated. Stair staining works perfectly now with traffic eliminated. Final review with homeowner or builder ensures complete satisfaction.
